Football coach Myron Stovell, 39, is shot during a practice session at Malcolm X Park.

October 13, 2007

The founder, president, and coach of the Boston Bengals Pop Warner team, Stovell is shot in front of his son and other players by a 15-year-old in a dispute over the boy’s unleashed pit bull. Two years earlier, Stovell had objected when suburban teams wanted to dissolve the league to avoid playing teams from Boston because of safety concerns. He is shot at the same time hundreds of people are holding a peace march on the State House following the funeral of 13-year-old Steven Odom, one of the city’s latest victims of street violence.
